- The Front Desk Referral- - very important
e.g. How do I get home- The girls at the front desk will help you.
e.g. Where is the X-ray etc?
Get them out of your room and somewhere else - especially where an
argument is possible.
- The Nurse Referral- send them with a note- you keep working somewhere else.
- Principle for Referrals for Tests
simple items first consult,
plan to do more / more complex next visit.
- e.g . STI check – do the basics / serious stuff on the first visit - only this.
If they don’t come back you have not wasted your time.
If they do come back, you have their commitment to keep working with you for an answer.
Medical system likes this. Reduces pathology cost per consultation.
If they don’t come back, you don’t do all the expensive complex stuff either.
- Safety First- Don't expose yourself to hazards.
: get rid of hazards.
- Really sick patients - refer
Look after yourself first with infectious diseases: e.g. Pneumonia
You cannot help the sick and ill by joining them.
- You do not have to touch them > e.g."moisturized" people>> I have allergies.
- Self-Referral e.g. Abdominal pain – if in any doubt, do an FBC E&LFTs, urine MCS.
Many issues declare themselves or resolve with time.
Better chance to get it right if you see them back.
If you get it wrong – it still looks like you are actively doing something.
