Issues for Doctors

  • If you have privately billing patients,
you are probably treating many of your bulk billed patients
in the same fashion as your private patients.

These patients have already told you that the only thing they value is a bulk billed consult.
So long as they are bulk billed, these patients will think they are receiving a good service,
    even with simple basic consultations.

  • You get paid just as much for five-minute consultations as for almost 20 minutes.
This is almost a quadruple rate (X4) disparity.
Someone will go broke if you work at the wrong speed :
    you or your workplace business.

  • Magic Number for Long Consults is 10%. You get "noticed" by the HIC above this level.
There are targets especially for Pathology.
Full time doctors have bigger cost profiles and are more "profitable" to go after.

  • If this is not relevant to you - because you do not work in a bulk billing clinic:
    Remember
  • 85% of all consultations are bulk billed. (HIC stats).

In my old practice of 50% private patients and 50% bulk billing entitled patients –
this translated into 80 to 90% of my patient volume being bulk billing patients and 10% being paying patients.

My friend who tells me he works at a clinic with 50% bulk billing and 50%  private  billing,
was forced to refund  $150,000 for excess bulk billing to the HIC.
    Perhaps he did see 70 BB and 70 Private patients per day. But - - - - - -

People are not always truthful about their business issues to others:
Make your own decisions, relevant to you.
